Description
this was the result of a soul stricken attempt at rendering my experience of a vigil held at the School of the Americas, Ft. Benning, Georgia, into a conceptual form which would end up being the orbital center of an article i wrote entitled 'art is resistance.' (now lost)
i created this in Atlanta, 2 days down the I-75 from whence i had come, as an iconographic protest sign.
Symbolically, this holds a lot of meaning for me. it represents my soul's response to internalized suffering as a resilient expression. In my mind, the wildfire of genocide that tore through latin america at the hand of ruthless emissaries of US foreign policy had a deeper agenda than just imperialist motivation. It was a cultural war on the imagination.
In the light of this awareness, Robert Nestor Marley's words, 'emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds,' seem to have a much more profound significance.
